This set includes 16 copies of the student magazine-style book, Time for a Change, 40 pages each, full-colour. This title explores the histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada and some of the challenges created by the Indian Residential School System and the Indian Act. The need for reconciliation is also explored, and the importance to all Canadians of finding their own path to reconciliation. The set also includes an 80-page teacher's guide the breaks the student material out spread by spread. Includes a getting started section with background information on preparing to teach the unit, questions to ask yourself about the topic, social/political context, cultural perspectives, and your students, ways to introduce the unit and the inquiry question, plus assessment ideas and learning outcomes.
The teaching guide also features lessons plans for each selection in the student book with background information (history, perspectives, culture), prompts for connecting to the final project at various points throughout, a list of recommended multi-media resources (videos, websites, books), questions for before reading to prompt students to build or reflect on background knowledge, cross-curricular suggestions to extend conceptual learning and understanding, questions for further/deeper inquiry, and more. Plus, a pronunciation guide at the back of the book.
This resource was created with an Indigenous Advisory Team. We asked Indigenous educators across the country for advice and then brought together a team of 10 highly qualified and knowledgeable advisors to develop the resource. The advisors contributed articles, photographs, ideas, expertise, wisdom, and perspectives; they oversaw every aspect of the resource.
